Live export and NSW
NSW is not directly involved in the live export trade - there is no export of live animals through NSW ports. Live exports fall under Commonwealth legislation administered by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service.
The treatment of Australian animals which are exported as live animals is currently being reviewed. The Australian Government has commissioned an independent review into Australia’s livestock export trade, which will ensure the supply chain is verifiable and transparent up to and including the point of slaughter. More information about this review is available at the Australian Government’s live export website.
In addition to this review, the Australian Government is undertaking a number of actions to secure a long-term and sustainable future for the live animal export industry. These actions include;
- development of a new livestock supply chain assurance system
- financial assistance for those affected by the temporary trade suspension to Indonesia
- creation of two separate industry government working groups
- instigation of a scientific review of the ongoing appropriateness of the restraining boxes used by Australia’s Chief Veterinary Officer
More information about these actions is available from the Australian Government’s Action on Live Export website.
