Objective

To return a hoof with deformed claws to a normal shape.

Video, practice on abattoir specimens to introduce skills involved in paring and rasping.

Details of procedure

If necessary, stock should be restrained by either casting with ropes or in a crush incorporating a tilting platform. Care should be taken with casting to prevent rope damage to udders or prepuce. Animals used to handling, such as dairy cows, may not need restraint.

Drugs, chemicals, or biological agents

Impact of procedure on the wellbeing of animal(s)

Minimal, if handled quietly.

Reuse and repeated use

Repeated use is possible after the hoof has been allowed to regrow. Reuse at the same teaching session is not advisable, or the hoof may become over-trimmed.

Cattle should be handled quietly before, during and after the procedure.

Pain relief measures

Not required
