Objective

To tether cattle in an appropriate manner.

Details of Procedure

A tether should be loose fitting around the neck, have swivels and should be well clear of other objects to prevent entanglement.

It should be of sufficient length to allow normal activities and body functions (eg lying down, stretching and standing).

Drugs, chemicals or biological agents

None needed

Impact of procedure on wellbeing of animal(s)

With appropriate care, there is very little ill-effect on cattle, however they may become distressed if isolated from other cattle for long periods.

Reuse and repeated use

Cattle are to be released as soon as the demonstration or experiment is completed.

Care of animal(s) during/after the procedure

Regular inspection of the tether to ensure that there is no damage to the neck, or entanglement. The possibility of misadventure through strangulation or injury from the tether must be constantly avoided.

Food, water and shelter must be adequate.

Pain relief measures

Not needed under normal circumstances.

Qualifications, experience or training necessary to perform this procedure

A sound knowledge of cattle husbandry and their requirements for food, water, shelter.
