Objective

To collect faecal samples suited to laboratory analysis.

Alternatives to animal use for teaching

Collect faeces from pen floor.

Details of procedure

Small pigs - restraint by picking up. Squeeze flanks firmly, have collection vessel ready to receive faeces. (Demonstrate this technique only on pigs with diarrhoea.)

Large pigs - restraint, if required. Pass a gloved, lubricated finger through the anus to stimulate rectal evacuation.

Minimal

Reuse and repeated use

Collect one sample per pig.

Care of animal(s) during/after procedure

Firm gentle restraint should be applied to reduce the chance of traumatic injury.

Nil

Qualifications, experience or training necessary to perform this procedure

Demonstrator: Experience in the procedure.

Students: Should be competent in the handling and restraint of pigs.
