Objective

To remove the tusks (canine teeth) of mature boars above the gum line to prevent fighting/injury to other animals/humans. In most cases all four teeth should be trimmed; however, the teeth in the upper jaw may be considerably smaller and only the tusks in the lower jaw need be trimmed.

Details of procedure

The preferred method of tipping the canine teeth is the use of embryotomy wire or a wire saw. The boar should be restrained by a snout or snubbing rope and tied to an immovable object (see SOP 19). Once restrained, the boar will usually stand with open mouth. The wire should be looped around each tooth in turn. Position the wire a few millimetres above the gum line and remove the tip of the tooth with a steady sawing action.

Drugs, chemicals or biological agents

Tranquillisers are not always required, but are useful with aggressive boars. Azaperone 2mg/kg IM (up to 400 mg), Acetylpromazine 0.03-0.1mg/kg IM.

An analgesic such as Flunixin, Meloxicam or Tolfedine should be administered 20 minutes prior to the procedure.

Impact of procedure on wellbeing of animal(s)

Low level from physical or chemical restraint. The procedure removes the tip of the tooth only and does not involve the pulp cavity.

Reuse and repeated use

Not applicable for teaching. Teeth may need to be cut at 12-monthly intervals.

Care of animal(s) during/after procedure

Observe recovery from tranquilliser. Some tranquillisers may cause penile prolapse and subsequent traumatic injury.

Qualifications, experience skills or training necessary to perform this procedure

Demonstrator

Should be competent in the correct techniques and familiar with the anatomy of the pig before attempting this procedure.

Students

Familiarity with basic anatomy, competency in handling and restraint of boars.
