Objective
To identify pigs by a permanent notch in the margins and tips of the ears.

Details of procedure
Ear notching should be done in the first few days after farrowing using the correct notching pliers. Pliers should be kept sharp and be disinfected between piglets to prevent tearing of the ear and infection. Piglets should be restrained, usually by holding, to ensure immobility and accuracy of the marking. Each notch should be cut quickly and neatly.
