Objective

To identify a pig by means of an ear tattoo.

Alternatives to animal use for teaching

Video presentation. Initial practice may be carried out on abattoir specimens.

Details of procedure

Clean the ear and the tattoo blocks with methylated spirits prior to use.

Pliers, letters and numbers should be kept in good order and disinfected.

Pigs should be adequately restrained prior to tattooing to ensure that the procedure is carried out as quickly and as painlessly as possible. The thinner part of the ear (inside or outside) is most suitable for tattooing. The needles should completely pierce the pig's ear, avoiding veins where possible. After piercing the ear, thoroughly rub the ink into the puncture marks.

The procedure is well tolerated although there is short-term pain on tattoo application.

Pigs to be tattooed once only.

Demonstrators: Should be familiar with the correct techniques before attempting this procedure.
