Objective

To assess body composition (amount of fat) using ultrasound equipment.

Alternatives to animal use for teaching

Video presentation, practice on cadavers

Details of procedure

Sheep should be restrained in a race and the procedure carried out according to the instruction manual for the equipment.

Drugs, chemicals or biological agents

Lubricating gel.

Impact of procedure on wellbeing of animal(s)

The procedure does not have any harmful effect on the sheep.

Reuse and repeated use

The technique can be repeated on the same sheep as long as it is being tolerated.

Care of animal(s) during/after the procedure

Careful observation, although the procedure is not expected to cause any change in the animal's welfare.

Pain relief measures

Not needed.

Qualifications, experience or training necessary to perform this procedure

Experience in sheep handling. Experience in the use of the probe and ability to read and interpret the oscilloscope.
