Palpatation of genitalia of bulls
Ref Code: CAT28
Category
Teaching - 2
Research - 4
Objective
To assess genitalia of bulls for abnormalities and to measure scrotal circumference.
Alternatives to animal use
Abattoir specimens and anatomy texts are useful for preliminary instruction. Techniques may be demonstrated on video prior to examination of the bull.
Details of procedure
Bulls should be restrained to prevent injury to the operator. This usually requires a crush with a head bail.
The operator approaches the bull from the rear. The testes are drawn down into the scrotum and the structures palpated without using excessive pressure. Assessment of the size, consistency and tone should be recorded. Scrotal circumference measurement should be made with a metal tape at the widest circumference of the testicles. The length of the sheath should be palpated for abnormalities and the prepuce examined. The bull will soon respond if made uncomfortable.
Internal organs may be examined by palpation per rectum.
Drugs, chemicals, or biological agents
None required
Impact of procedure on the wellbeing of animal(s)
The procedure is usually well tolerated.
Reuse and repeated use
The procedure may be repeated if the bull will tolerate it.
Care of animal(s) during/after procedure
Observation
Pain relief measures
None required.
Qualifications, experience or training necessary to perform this procedure
Demonstrator: Extensive experience with this procedure.
Students: Understanding of the anatomy of the genital tract of the bull and experience with the restraint of bulls.
