Standard Operating Procedures - cattle
Restraint and inspection

Ref Code: CAT32

Category

Teaching - 2

Research - 4

Objective

To restrain cattle to enable procedures to be carried out.

Alternatives to animal use for teaching

Video.

Details of procedure

Live animal assessment including fat and muscle scoring may be done visually in yards or manually in a race or crush. If there is no bailhead, animals may be restrained by the use of halters.

Operation of crush and bailhead - The use of a baulk gate should be encouraged in the initial stages of instruction in this technique. Operators should be made aware that cattle can be injured in poorly designed bailheads. Emergency procedures to be followed if cattle go down in the race should be taught and understood.

Drugs, chemicals, or biological agents

None required.

Impact of procedure on the wellbeing of animal(s)

Minimal, if handled quietly.

Reuse and repeated use

Repeated use will make cattle wary of entering the race and moving through the head bail.

Care of animal(s) during/after procedure

Cattle should be handled quietly before, during and after the procedure.

Pain relief measures

None required.

Qualifications, experience or training necessary to perform this procedure

Demonstrator: Experience in the procedure.

Students: Competence in handling cattle.
