Objective

Collection of monthly blood samples from 10 calves per herd for the detection of serological titres to arboviruses. Calves must be individually identified and bled monthly from October to June.

None practical

Details of Procedure

Identify individual sentinel calves. Collect 10mL of blood for serology from the jugular vein or the tail vein if the calf is old enough (see SOP CAT6 for techniques for blood collection).

Drugs, chemicals, or biological agents

Antiseptic to clean skin surface prior to venipuncture.

Impact of procedure on the wellbeing of animal(s)

Procedure is well tolerated.

Reuse and repeated use

Calves are used as sentinels for one season only.

Care of animal(s) during/after procedure

Ensure adequate restraint during the procedure. Observe animals for excessive distress. Monitor response following procedure and performance over the sentinel period.

Nil required

Qualifications, experience or training necessary to perform this procedure

Prior experience with calf restraint and with venipuncture.

Procedures should be clearly demonstrated and the objectives of the sentinel program explained.
