Details of procedure
Non-oestrous females of appropriate size are restrained in specially designed crates. Bulls are observed when mounting and serving. Full details of the procedure are found in ‘The Veterinary Examination of Bulls’.
Drugs, chemicals, or biological agents
All cows and bulls used in the tests should be fully vaccinated against vibriosis before the tests are conducted. Vaginal lubricants are used prior to testing, together with a mild sedative. Following testing, an epidural anaesthetic may be administered to prevent straining.
Impact of procedure on the wellbeing of animal(s)
If the procedure is followed as specified in ‘The Veterinary Examination of Bulls’, effects on well-being are nil or minimal.

Refer to ‘The Veterinary Examination of Bulls’.
Care of animal(s) during/after procedure
Stock should be placed in close paddocks so that they may be observed for any side-effects. Cow identification numbers should be recorded.

Nil
Qualifications, experience or training necessary to perform this procedure
Demonstrator: Extensive experience in the procedure. Veterinary supervision is required.
Students: Extensive experience in handling cattle.
