Ref Code: CAT31

Objective
To train cattle for showing.
Alternatives to animal use for teaching
Lecture, video presentation.
Details of procedure
- Halter breaking. Stock may be restrained to fixed objects by halters for limited periods not to exceed four hour intervals without access to water. Shade should be provided.
- Placement of nose rings. Bulls are ringed between 1-2 years of age. The ring is removed when a bull is put out with cows to prevent its being caught on a projecting object. Note that animals should never be tied up by a nose ring - it is only there to allow control when parading.
- Show preparation including washing, clipping, brushing. Excessive washing with detergents should be avoided. Rugs should be fitted to ensure there is no rubbing or irritation to the animal and no chance of the rug catching on objects. Heavy rugs should not be used in hot weather. Care should be exercised when clipping to avoid sudden movements by the beast.
The use of training methods such as bull walkers should not exceed four hour intervals without access to water. Leading unbroken stock attached to vehicles should be of short - less than one hour - duration several times per day. The use of donkeys/mules should be closely monitored to ensure the welfare of both animals with respect to feeding and watering.
