Ref Code: PIG06
Category
Teaching - 3 (Instructor:student ratio 1:3)

Objective
To collect a semen sample from a boar for examination or for artificial insemination
Alternatives to animal use for teaching
Use of video presentation.
Details of procedure
Semen should be collected from boars using the 'gloved hand' technique in the presence of a 'dummy sow' or a sow in standing oestrus. The sow should not be restrained, but should be placed in a large pen suitable for mating. Sows should not be used for more than two collections per day.
The boar should be encouraged to mount the sow/dummy sow in a normal manner. As the penis is extended, the penis should be diverted from entering the vagina. The tip of the penis should be firmly held in the gloved hand to simulate the locking of the penis into the sow's cervix. The shaft of the penis should not be touched.
The penis should be held whilst the boar completes his full ejaculate (3-7 minutes) and then released. The boar should then be led away from the mating pen.
