Objective

To pare the feet of sheep to diagnose and treat footrot.

Alternatives to animal use for teaching

Use of abattoir specimens, videos.

Details of procedure

Demonstrations are only carried out on properties planning an approved footrot control and eradication program.

Sheep should be kept out of wet and muddy yards to ensure that the feet are dry and not contaminated by faeces. They should be restrained in appropriate sheep handling equipment.

Treatment should be in accordance with Primefact 265 - Footrot in sheep and goats.

Drugs, chemicals or biological agents

Registered chemicals or antibiotics.

Impact of procedure on the wellbeing of animal(s)

Although the procedure may cause short-term pain, in the long-term, footrot treatment is beneficial for animals.

Reuse and repeated use

Animals may only be used once per demonstration.

Care of animal(s) during/after procedure

Sheep should be treated according to the procedures laid out in the control/eradication program.

Pain relief measures

Procedure should have little impact on sheep when carried out according to procedures.

Qualifications, experience or training necessary to perform this procedure

The demonstration must be performed by a competent operator under the supervision of a veterinarian.
