Wether comparison trials

Ref Code

Ref Code: SHE17

Category

Research - 4

Objective

Compare the relative merits of wethers of different bloodlines when run under identical conditions.

Alternatives to animal use for teaching

Not applicable

Details of procedure

Follow standard procedures for ear tagging, shearing, body weighing, midside sampling and other general management practices carried out by the co-operating landholder. Appropriate disease control programs should be instituted for internal and external parasites e.g. Wormkill, Drenchplan, Flywise, Licekill.

Drugs, chemicals or biological agents

As for normal management practices.

Impact of procedure on wellbeing of animals

The trials require all wethers to be run under identical conditions with good management so that the fact that it is a comparison trial will have little or no effect on the well-being of the wethers.

Reuse and repeated use

Since the trial involves normal husbandry practices, there is no limit on reuse.

Care of animals during/after the procedure

The usual management surveillance practices will be carried out during the course of the trial.

Pain relief measures

Not needed.

Qualifications, experience or training necessary to perform this procedure

Co-operating landholder must be adequately skilled and capable of caring for the trial wethers.
