Anthrax
Primefact Number: 114 Edition: Second edition Released/reviewed: 23 Dec 2008
Anthrax is an acute infectious disease affecting sheep, cattle, horses and pigs, and many other animals including humans.
This Primefact provides information on the bacteria that cause anthrax, and describes the signs of infection. If you believe anthrax is affecting your stock you should immediately call a vet, and you have a legal responsibility to immediately notify an inspector. Do not handle, open or skin the carcass, as this will expose you to serious risk of infection.
Vaccination is highly effective, and reduces the long-term risk to stock and humans. This Primefact describes how and when to vaccinate your animals, and the follow-up treatment required.
Note that, for an infection in humans, early medical diagnosis and treatment is essential to avoid serious illness or death.
