Prevalence areas effective 31 March 2008-2012

Prevalence areas are defined geographical areas that are determined by national Animal Health Committee on the basis of known and estimated level of disease.

The known or estimated level of disease refers to the proportion of sheep flocks in an area that are known or estimated to be infected. This is normally determined by surveillance using both field investigation and inspection at abattoirs.

Three prevalence areas became operational on 31 March 2008. They have been determined using surveillance data collected over the last two years.

A range of Prevalence Area descriptions and maps are available.

The OJDMP involves a rationalisation of the existing prevalence areas from four prevalence areas to three prevalence areas and a subsequent change in the ABC points allocated to each prevalence area.

This has been achieved by amalgamating the existing high and medium prevalence areas.

Data from abattoir surveillance has shown that the prevalence of OJD has increased in some regions and decreased in other regions.

The new prevalence areas and associated ABC points were agreed by stakeholders after technical analysis of this data.

The new boundaries more closely relate to regional risk; while the new points quantify the true risk that sheep from these areas represent.

This table summarises the new prevalence areas and their ABC (Assurance Based Credits) points:

Original prevalence area

New prevalence area

New prevalence estimate limits
(% of OJD infected flocks) from 31 March 2008

(see maps for detail)

The following areas will be upgraded to the new Medium Prevalence Area (currently Medium Prevalence Area at 29 January 2008):

  • All of the Cooma Rural Lands Protection Board (RLPB)
  • three areas of the Braidwood RLPB (see map):
    • the area in Division C generally west of the Queanbeyan River and Urialla Creek that borders the Australian Capital Territory on the west and the Cooma RLPB on the west and south,
    • the area in Division C from Captains Flat generally south west to the Cooma RLPB boundary at Tindery Crossing and east to Division D of the Braidwood RLPB and

The following area of the Murray RLPB (see map) will be upgraded to the new Low Prevalence Area (currently Low Prevalence Area at 29 January 2008):

  • the area generally south of the Conargo - Jerilderie - Oaklands Road and extending from the current Medium Prevalence Area boundary in the east to the Riverina RLPB in the west and bounded by the Murray River on the south

The following areas in Braidwood and Dubbo RLPBs will be downgraded to the new High Prevalence Area:

  • Braidwood RLPB (see map) - that part of the current Low Prevalence Area (at 29 January 2008) in division A bounded to the north-east by the NSW-ACT border (from approximately 10km west of Queanbeyan) then the ACT-Bungendore railway to Bungendore, then to the east by the Hoskinstown Road, then Gidleigh Lane and then the ridge of the Turallo Range extending to the boundary with Division C, and to the south by the boundary of the current Medium Prevalence Area (Captain’s Flat Road) to the ACT border approx. 10km west of Queanbeyan..
  • Dubbo RLPB (see map) - that part of the current Very Low Prevalence Area (at 29 January 2008) situated east of the Molong to Euchareena Road from the boundary with Molong RLPB to the , Burrendong Way, then south of an unnamed road (commencing approx. 2km north of the Euchareena junction and extending approx. 4km to a creek crossing), then generally south of that creek (extending due east for approx 12 km until it reaches the boundary of the Dubbo and Mudgee-Merriwa RLPB) then bounded on the east by the boundary with the Mudgee-Merriwa Board, and to the south to the boundary with the Central Tablelands and Molong boards .
