Applying for project funding from the Ovine Johne’s Disease (OJD) Industry Fund

Applicants seeking funding from the residual monies in the OJD Industry Fund for research, extension or surveillance projects may apply using the template for funding applications (72kb Word file).

The OJD Industry Fund was originally established to assist producers who were affected by OJD. Funds were collected through the Transaction-based Contribution Scheme, via a levy on sheep sales. The scheme has been wound up and the Minister for Primary Industries has:

  • directed that the NSW Rural Assistance Authority act as the trustee for these remaining funds, and the remaining funds be applied for the benefit of the sheep industry;
  • established an advisory committee, the Sheep Advisory Group, to provide him with advice on proposals for the use of these funds.

Guide to making an application to the Sheep Advisory Group for project funding from the OJD Industry Fund

Background of the OJD Industry Fund

Under an Order pursuant to section 30A(4) of the Agricultural Livestock (Disease Control Funding) Act 1998, the Minister for Primary Industries has:

  • directed that any money standing to the credit of the OJD Industry Fund be applied for the benefit of persons or bodies representing the sheep industry as directed by the Minister from time to time; and
  • established an advisory committee titled the Sheep Advisory Group to provide advice on the expenditure of the funds described above; and
  • directed that the NSW Rural Assistance Authority act as the trustee for these remaining funds.

Possible project types

  • Research
  • Extension
  • Surveillance

Other sources of funding for proposed project

Applicants should be aware that the OJD Industry Fund is not sufficient to fund large projects, especially of a long-term nature.

Applications should document other proposed sources of funding.

Benefits to the sheep industry

All projects must state the proposed benefit to the sheep industry, particularly any connection of the project to the management of ovine Johne’s disease. (Note: As the industry fund was raised for the benefit of producers affected by OJD, projects that cannot demonstrate a connection to OJD are unlikely to receive funding approval.)

Reporting

All applicants should be aware that funding is contingent on the applicant meeting stipulated reporting deadlines.

Lodging applications

All applications should be lodged using the template for funding applications (72kb Word file) - please complete the form on-screen, then print it off, sign and date it, and forward to:

How does the project funding process from the OJD Industry Fund work?

An application will form the basis of a contract between the applicant and NSW Rural Assistance Authority (RAA), the trustees of the fund. The contract will set out a schedule of milestones and contribution payments. The RAA will issue payments from the OJD Industry Fund following the process outlined in the diagram below.
