European foulbrood and its control

Agriculture primefact cover
Primefact Number: 1000    Edition: First edition    Released/reviewed: Apr 2010

European foulbrood (EFB) is caused by the bacterium Melissococcus pluton, and has become one of the most serious bee diseases in NSW in terms of reduced productivity of affected hives.

The condition was identified in Australia in 1977.

EFB can cause extensive losses in both amateur and commercial apiaries.

This Primefact has been written to help beekeepers to avoid severe outbreaks through sound management practices, regular checks for disease and early treatment when disease is confirmed.
