Captive bolt euthanasia of pigs

Agriculture primefact cover
Primefact Number: 975    Edition: First edition    Released/reviewed: Dec 2009

This Primefact provides information on recommended methods for humane euthanasia of sick or compromised pigs.

Euthanasia means ‘good death’.

Pigs that do not respond to treatment or are in acute pain and distress should be euthanased.

The ‘Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals – Pigs’ (MCOP) (www.csiro.au) provides guidelines on approved euthanasia methods.

Timely euthanasia of pigs is an important component of a piggery’s welfare plan.

The MCOP Standard for euthanasia (7.1) states that ‘the method of euthanasia must cause sudden unconsciousness with death occurring when unconscious’.
