Selection indexes work for all Merino strains and breeding objectives
Primefact Number: 578 Edition: First edition Released/reviewed: 01 Mar 2007
The Trangie QPLU$ Merino flock was established to demonstrate the improvements possible in clean fleece weight and fibre diameter using an appropriate selection index to meet various breeding objectives. Selection lines were established in fine, medium and broad wool strains. All selection lines were selected solely on clean fleece weight and fibre diameter index rankings except for the Industry line which used a combination of visual assessment and index figures.
Results from 10 years of within-flock selection are provided in this Primefact. Contents include:
- project background and how the selection lines were established for the different breeding objectives;
- annual improvements achieved in hogget clean fleece weight and fibre diameter in the fine, medium and broad wool strains;
- implications for industry.
