A guideline to identifying important agricultural lands in NSW

Summary

This guideline documents the factors that should be considered when developing important agricultural land (IAL) maps and their supporting information. The information gained from the development of IAL maps will assist decision makers to:

  • develop strategic plans to retain important food and fibre production lands, and
  • avoid land use conflicts and the associated community and environmental impacts, particularly in regions where competition for land is significant.

The guideline will help local and state governments develop information that supports strategic planning at local, sub-regional or regional scales. When agricultural land is identified and its value and contribution is known, informed decision making about current and future land uses can occur.
