Draft NSW Fireweed Strategy 2010-2015
Fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis) is a highly invasive and opportunistic weed that quickly colonises overgrazed pastures and disturbed areas. It competes strongly with existing pasture plants for light, moisture and soil nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen. This competition can lead to the further deterioration of pastures and a reduction in overall grazing area. Fireweed can sometimes be poisonous to livestock, particularly cattle and horses.
I&I NSW have led the development of a Draft NSW Fireweed Strategy which details strategic direction for the next five years. The draft will be available for comment for a period of three months.
If you would like to make a submission, or would like more information about the Strategy please contact Scott Charlton, Invasive Species Strategy & Policy Officer on (02) 6738 8504 or email scott.charlton@industry.nsw.gov.au.
