Weed profile: Cape ivy

Cape ivy

Cape ivy

Cape ivy

Delairea odorata

Originating in Africa, Cape ivy is a twining succulent climber and scrambler. The stems can root at the nodes when in contact with soil creating another plant. It also reproduced from stem fragments and seed. The plant has bright green ivy shaped leaves, small kidney-shaped leaf structures that occur at the base of the leaves and small yellow daisy-like flower clusters from winter to early spring.

Cape ivy seed is dispersed by wind and water, and often by the dumping of garden waste on bush land edges. It can be highly invasive and suppresses native vegetation by carpeting the ground and climbing into the canopy.
