Weed profile: Coolatai grass

Coolatai grass

Hyparrhenia hirta

Coolatai grass is a tall, tufted, summer active perennial growing to more than one metre in height. It has paired seedheads and grey-green leaves which are harsh to touch.

Coolatai grass can grow with little rain, grows longer into the cooler months than most other native summer grasses and, because of its low digestibility, is avoided by livestock and can dominate native pastures. It is often considered a weed, but careful pasture managment can significantly improve its value.
