Weed profile: Hawkweed

Orange hawkweed

Hawkweed

Hieracium spp.

The genus Hieracium includes several hundred species known as hawkweeds. All the species of hawkweed that are stoloniferous (that is, spread by aboveground stems) have potential to be serious weeds in the temperate areas of south-eastern Australia, including the Australian Alps and Tasmanian grasslands.

Hawkweeds are highly invasive plants and are a major threat to biodiversity, conservation areas and native grasslands. Hawkweeds can also impact heavily on pastures, roadsides and gardens. They are frost-tolerant and competitive across a wide range of soil types.
