Weed profile: Privet

Privet

Privet

Privet

Ligustrum spp.

There are about 50 species of privet which, with the exception of common privet, Ligustrum vulgare (which is native to Europe), occur naturally in eastern Asia. Privet is a member of the Oleaceae (olive) family.

Broad leaf (or large leaf) privet, L. lucidum, and small leaf (or Chinese) privet, L. sinense, which were introduced from Asia, are now widespread weeds on the New South Wales north and central coast. They infest disturbed land, native bushland and gardens and the pollen produces allergic reactions in many people.

Status

  • Declared in NSW under the Noxious Weeds Act 1993 (Broad leaf privet (view details), Small leaf /Chinese privet (view details))
