Name: Drought recovery strategies
Description: This course is aimed at the basic strategies that need to be considered to successfully recover from drought with a focus on pasture and livestock.
Cost: $350 GST incl.
Course aims:

To assist participants to make informed decisions regarding drought recovery through developing management strategies such as grazing and livestock recovery plans.

Learning outcomes:
  • Understanding of pasture types, pasture condition and stock requirements as part of an integrated management strategy to recovery.
  • Recognize the importance of pasture rehabilitation.
  • Awareness of livestock health issues.
  • Knowledge of the potential long term impacts of reduced stock numbers and assess strategies to manage.
Length: 1 day
Course program/structure:
  • Outline the effects of drought on pastures.
  • Assessment of surviving pastures.
  • Management of remaining pastures.
  • Re-establishment of new pastures.
  • Fodder conservation strategies.
  • Activity session highlighting the dollar impact of reduced stock numbers.
  • Demonstrate Im (decision support tool).
  • Develop a livestock recovery plan.
  • Discuss issues raised by landholders.
Resources and method of delivery:

Participants are provided with course notes, a DPI Drought recovery guide, and various handouts.
This course is delivered using indoor and out door instruction.
