Course details

Name: Farming in a changing climate
Description: A three day workshop spread over 6 weeks to assist landholders prepare and adapt their property for climate risk.
Cost:

$930 GST free

This course is registered under the Commonwealth Government's FarmReady program. Eligible primary producers can be reimbursed for the cost of this course. See the FarmReady website for more details.

Course aims:
  • Encourage appropriate responses to climate change such as high flow pumping and appropriate on farm water storage.
  • Provide training in strategies to improve rainfall utilisation which do not significantly impact catchment flows.
  • Provide training tailored to landscapes and soils that will allow landowners to improve the resilience of their properties to climatic impacts.
  • Promote measures that contribute to carbon sequestration and soil health.
  • Integrate training with the Community Support Officers and available incentive funding to promote the maximal conversion of plans into on ground works.
Learning outcomes:
  • Access seasonal forecasting services.
  • Estimate water storage needs.
  • Recognise the differential impacts of dry seasons on the landscape.
  • Measure soil properties affecting moisture storage
  • Discriminate between important ground cover and indicator species.
  • Understand basic plant nutrition and
  • Be able to interpret soil tests.
  • Be aware of benchmarks for important soil nutrients.
  • Identify the limitations to soil moisture in your paddocks.
  • Recognise the impacts of landscape on moisture retention.
  • Mark areas on a property plan according to soil quality and moisture retention.
  • Plan targeted actions for each paddock to improve dry or wet season performance.
  • Prioritise and schedule targeted actions.
  • Locate sources of funding to support targeted actions.

  • Factors limiting root depth
  • Assessing your soil
Day 2:
  • Interpretation of soil test results
  • Soil Carbon Fractions
  • Carbon cycling
  • Management for Organic Carbon
  • Incorporating data into property plans.
  • Drying order in the landscape
  • Targeted strategies for soil moisture
Day 3:
  • What works best in different soils and locations
  • Selecting your priority action
  • Planning windbreaks.
  • Planning and costing your priority action.
  • Applying for incentive funding.
Resources and method of delivery: Participants receive procedural manual.

This course is delivered using indoor and out door instruction.

Accreditation: This course has been mapped to the national unit of competency RTE5523A, Develop climate risk management strategies.
