Course details

Name: Managing land capability, soil erosion and ground cover.
Description: This course covers the issues associated with soil erosion and groundcover during a drought by identifying the risks, developing field assessment skills and addressing management strategies.
Cost: $350 GST incl.
Course aims: To assist participants in making informed management decisions relating to the productivity and sustainability of their farms by identifying the limitations and opportunities which exist in regard to their land’s capability, soil and groundcover including weeds.
Learning outcomes:
  • Match land use to land capability.
  • Identify the causes of land degradation, such as decline of groundcover, soil erosion and the effects on productivity and natural resource management.
  • Understand the importance and role of groundcover.
  • Identify techniques for manipulating and assessing groundcover.
  • Develop management strategies for maintaining groundcover.
  • Recognise management options to manage the health of land, water, vegetation and weeds.
Length: 1 day
Course program/structure:
  • Definition of land capability and a practice exercise.
  • Information session and discussion on all aspects of soil erosion and groundcover.
  • Undertake techniques for assessing and measuring groundcover including pastures and weeds.
  • Plant identification and management of paddock plants including weeds.
Resources and method of delivery: Participants are provided with a course manual, a DPI Drought recovery guide, and have access to various related handouts.
This course is delivered using both indoor and outdoor instruction.
