Name: Property management planning (PMP) for natural resource management
Description: This is a course designed for land managers and farm families interested in natural resource management for sustainable farm production.
Cost:

$1595 GST-free

This course is registered under the Commonwealth Government's FarmReady program. Eligible primary producers can be reimbursed for the cost of this course. See the FarmReady website for more details.

Course aims:
  • Take participants through a process of assessing, planning, monitoring and evaluation of farm resources and enterprises.
  • Produce a property plan with a series of overlays for describing and interpreting farm infrastructure and resources.
  • Plan strategies for conversing and improving biodiversity outcomes for productivity and environmental gains.
  • Develop strategies for dealing with risk.
  • Produce a physical property plan for future farm and business development.
Learning outcomes:
  • Develop goals for the farm business.
  • Describe the physical environment of the farm.
  • Assess the condition and health of the farm's natural resources.
  • Plan for risk assessment.
  • Assess the viability of the farm plan.
Length: 6 days
Course program/structure: Day 1 - Creating your future
Develop a farm vision and strategic planning skills

Day2 - Your farm today: The physical environment
Land capability, whole farm ecology, biodiversity and soil management

Day 3 - Your farm today: Assessing the natural resources
Mapping and water quality

Day 4 - Your farm today: Assessing the natural resources
Vegetation assessment, description and monitoring

Day 5 - Your farm tomorrow: Risk management and planning
Minimising risk, suitable farm production

Day 6 - Your farm tomorrow: Making it happen
Assessment of the farm plan

Resources and method of delivery: Participants will be provided with the following resources:
  • PMP workshop manual, and four texts produced by NSW DPI Tocal:
    • Physical Property Planning
    • Vegetation: Survey and Assessment
    • Tocal Code of Land Use Practice
    • Put Yourself in the Picture (caring for your small rural property)
  • additional text handouts are Managing Drought and The Drought Recovery Guide produced by NSW DPI.

This practical workshop series is delivered using a mixture of both indoor and outdoor/paddock based instruction.

Participants will need to bring along an aerial photograph and topographic map of their property.

Participants are also encouraged to bring along their partner (no additional cost).

Accreditation: This course is mapped to the following national units of competency:
  • RTE5516A - Develop a whole farm plan
  • RTE4511A - Develop a soil use map for a rural property
