Name: Heavy horse care and handling
Description: An introductory heavy horse care and handling course for first-time owners or those thinking of purchasing.
Cost: After NSW Government subsidy, $280 GST-free.
Course aim:
  • To develop skills in basic heavy horse care and handling
  • To identify the occupational health and safety (OHS) issues around horses
  • To develop skills in the use of heavy horse handling equipment.
Learning outcomes:
  • Identify breeds and their characteristics
  • Understand basic horse care and handling
  • Identify hazards and OHS issues
  • Handle heavy horses in harness with implements
  • Prepare for showing
Length: 1 day
Course program/structure:
  • Breeds and their characteristics
  • Occupational health and safety around horses
  • Feeding requirements and costs
  • Horse handling
  • Heavy horse handling equipment
  • Showing preparation
Resources and method of delivery: Participants receive course notes.
This course is delivered using indoor and outdoor instruction.
Accreditation: This course is mapped to the national unit of competency, AHCLSK205A - Handle livestock using basic techniques.
