Name: Beekeeping as a business
Description: A course designed to enable beekeepers to make the transition of keeping honey bees from a hobby to a business.
Cost: After NSW Government subsidy $350 GST incl.
Course aims:
  • To provide existing beekeepers with a knowledge base to expand their beekeeping into a business.
Learning outcomes:
  • Build the knowledge and skills necessary to embark on a commercial beekeeping business.
  • Understand the limitations of commercial beekeeping.
  • Develop a foundation to seek further information and advice necessary for a beekeeping enterprise.
Length: 2 days
Course program/structure: Day 1
  • Lifestyle considerations
  • Health of operator
  • Specialisation options; honey, pollination, queens, packages, pollen, organic etc
  • Increasing hive numbers
  • Maintaining hive numbers
  • Site portfolio
  • Systems for regions
  • Management (nutrition and disease)

Day 2

  • Plant, Equipment, Transport and QualityAssurance
  • Tax and budgeting
  • Markets
  • Industry network
Resources and method of delivery: Participants receive course notes and manual.

This course is delivered using indoor and outdoor instruction.

Accreditation: This course has been mapped to the national units of competency:
  • RTE3118A, RTE3131A, RTE3904A and RTE4121A.
