Name: Dohne ram breeding and selection
Description: A course for Dohne Sheep breeders and agricultural consultations to develop a breeding program encompassing practical selection and assessment based on the Dohne breeding objective.
Cost: After NSW Government subsidy $500 GST free.
Course aims: To develop a highly efficient ram breeding program based on superior genetics.
Learning outcomes:
  • Identify and apply the principles of across-flock genetics evaluation system
  • Select progeny in a pedigree breeding program
  • Maintain records and interpret flock genetic performance data
  • Develop a breeding objective that will maximise sheep profitability
Length: 3 days
Course program/structure: Day 1
  • Welcome to the Workshop and Introductions
  • The role of the Dohne Merino Breed Society of South Africa
  • The Dohne Breeding System in Australia
  • Dohne Pedigree (Mating and Birth) recording
  • The Breeding Objective
  • Dohne Standards. Practical demonstration in the yards
  • Genetic principles and breeding methods
  • Lamb inspection - 2 practical exercises
  • Written evaluation - Breeding Objective & Pedigree recording

Day 2

  • Performance (100 and 365 day) recording
  • Reports & Transfers
  • Ewe Inspection - 2 practical exercises
  • Ewe Inspection continued
  • Ram inspection and selection - 2 practical exercises
  • The Foundation Flock Register
  • Written evaluation - Foundation Flock
  • Ram selection - combined performance and visual criteria

Day 3

  • Dohne Genetic Evaluation and discussion
  • Written evaluation - 100 & 365 recording, reports & evaluations
  • Practical evaluation - Ewes
  • Practical evaluation - Rams
  • Feedback and Discussion
Resources and method of delivery: Participants receive course notes and manual.
This course is delivered using indoor and out door instruction.
Accreditation: This course has been mapped to the national unit of competency RTE5107A/01 and RTE5107A/02.
