Sheep care and husbandry - PROfarm course

Course details

Name: Sheep care and husbandry
Description: This 2-day course is a mix of practical and theoretical components designed for property owners interested in breeding sheep.
Cost: After NSW Government subsidy, $400 GST-free (or $200 per session).
Course aims: This introductory course assists participants to develop their skills in the care, handling and management of sheep.
Learning outcomes: On completion of the course participants will be able to:
  • Describe basic sheep husbandry practices
  • Competently handle sheep, identifying safe practices
  • Identify basic nutritional requirements
  • Describe breeding and disease management principles
Length: 2 day
Course program/structure: Day 1:
  • Basic sheep handling and husbandry
  • Nutrition and disease management
  • Assessment, mating and breeding 
Day 2:
  • An emphasis on lambing and weaning
  • Breeding and selection
  • Flock management
Resources and method of delivery: This course is delivered using both indoor and outdoor instruction.
Participants will be provided with course notes.
Accreditation: This course is mapped to the following national unit of competency, RTE2118A Handle livestock using basic techniques.
