Name: Manage soils
Description: This subject covers the process of monitoring and managing soils in an agricultural or horticultural enterprise.
Cost: $285
Course aims: The aims of this course is to provide the knowledge and skills required to interpret soil tests for developing management or production plans, soil improvement programs, soil monitoring and document a soil management plan.
Learning outcomes:

There are eight topics in this subject.

  • What is soil?
  • Look at the land - what will you see?
  • Describing, classifying and testing soil
  • Improving soil fertility
  • Soil organic matter, animals, organisms and soil carbon
  • Managing risks to soil health
  • Managing for healthy soil
  • Your farm plan and its soils
Length: Approximately 8 weeks. This includes assessment.
Course program/structure:

During this course you will be asked to complete the following assessment tasks:

  1. Classify the soils on your property
  2. Describe your soil profile
  3. Sample, analyse, review and interpret soil test results
  4. Identify and cost fertilisers and other soil amendments
  5. Test for soil organisms and activity
  6. Identify and map soils at risk
  7. Determine and map land capability
  8. Prepare a production management plan for soil using a SWOT analysis
  9. Record and review your production plan
Resources and method of delivery: Online. All students will be provided with course resources.
Accreditation: This course is mapped to the national unit of competency, AHCSOL501A - Monitor and manage soils for production.
