Name: Navigating with your hand held GPS Receiver
Description: This one day course provides participants with the skills to be able to set up a GPS unit to the correct datum, be able to mark, store, download and import waypoints as well as being able to navigate back to a waypoint.
Cost: $340 GST free.
Course aims:
  • Understand how the GPS receiver works
  • Setting up a GPS with correct datum
  • Mark and navigate to and from multiple waypoints
  • Download, upload and store waypoints and track history from handheld GPS
  • Read and understand basic map datum
Learning outcomes: Participants will be able to set up a GPS unit to the correct datum, be able to mark, store, download and import waypoints as well as being able to navigate back to a waypoint.

2. How GPS works
  • Accuracy
  • Satellites
  • Map datum and map projections
3. Map reading exercise
  • Reading coordinates off topographic maps
4. Setting up your GPS
  • Classroom - setting up your GPS (datums, projections and tracking)
  • Clearing data from storage
  • Getting to know the buttons
5. Field Demo & Exercise
  • Locating Satellites
  • Marking waypoints, waypoint averaging, nearest wpts
  • Navigating to waypoints & routes
6. Downloading operations
  • Downloading waypoints, and uploading to GPS
  • Importing wpts to GIS
  • Mapsourse and OziExplorer software
Resources and method of delivery: Participants are provided with course notes.

This course is delivered using indoor instruction.
