Name: Introduction to pastures
Description: An introductory course that addresses the basics of pasture establishment, pasture varieties for different conditions and management of pastures for livestock production.
Cost: After NSW Gov subsidy $170 GST-free.
Course aims: To assist participants to select appropriate pasture species and to develop a basic understanding of pasture management.
Learning outcomes:
  • Identify features of different pastures and fodder crops, including seasonal growth patterns of grasses and legumes
  • Select pasture species that match landscape and soil fertility conditions
  • Assess fertiliser requirements
  • Review methods for sowing improved pastures
  • Identify grazing management options to suit pasture growth, livestock requirements and weed control
Length: 1 day
Course program/structure:
  • Identify pasture establishment and management issues
  • Inspect highly improved pastures (dairy) and planting equipment
  • Inspect and discuss improved pastures for beef production
  • Discussion on pasture variety selection, fertiliser requirements and grazing management options
Resources and method of delivery: Participants are provided with a local sowing guide and course handouts.

This course is delivered using both indoor and outdoor instruction.

Accreditation: This course is mapped to the national unit of competency, RTE3006A - Establish pastures and crops for livestock production.
