Name: Identification and management of native grass pastures for agriculture and conservation
Description: This course will assist landholders to identify native grasses, understand why these grasses best fit into an agricultural landscape, and learn how to manage these grasses for agriculture and conservation.
Cost:

$230 GST-free. Includes the publication Native Grasses by Meredith Mitchell.

This course is registered under the Commonwealth Government's FarmReady program. Eligible primary producers can be reimbursed for the cost of this course. See the FarmReady website for more details.

Course aims:
  • To recognise major native pastures of the area.
  • To learn the strengths and weaknesses of these grasses.
  • To understand where native grasses best fit into an agricultural landscape and why.
  • To learn how to best manage these grasses for agriculture and conservation.
Learning outcomes:
  • Identify and describe the role of local native grasses.
  • Recognition of vegetation links to soil acidity.
  • Describe the differences between C3 and C4 grasses and their growth cycles.
  • Understand how to achieve a managed change in native-based pastures.
Length: 1 day
Course program/structure:
  • Introduction and outline of course
  • Native grass species and management
  • Field walk with practical recognition
  • Field walk discussion of links between soils/trees/grasses
  • Identification of grass species brought in by participants
  • Course review
Resources and method of delivery: Participants are provided with the publication Native Grasses by Meredith Mitchell.

The practical short course is mainly delivered in the field.

Accreditation: This course is mapped to the national unit of competency, RTC2016A - Recognise plants.
