Name: Procrop - Canola growth and development
Description: This course describes the growth and development of the canola plant from germination to seed filling. The environmental factors and management actions that influence each growth stage are provided as a practical reference for managing crops.
Cost: After NSW Government subsidy $200 GST exclusive.
Course aims: Develop a better understanding of the link between crop growth and development and crop management.
Learning outcomes:
  • Explain the role of moisture and temperature.
  • Accurately assess crop growth stage.
  • Describe how the root system grows.
  • Understand the effect of vernalisation, photoperiod and thermal time on development in different varieties.
  • Understand how dry matter or biomass is accumulated.
  • Describe the effects of frost, heat and moisture on reproductive development.
  • Understand the impact of conditions during seed development on grain yield and quality.
Length: 4, ½ Day sessions
Course program/structure:
  • Session 1: Germination discussing germination and sowing
  • Session 2: Vegetative growth looking at biomass production, root development, grazing.
  • Session 3: Reproductive development - held at flowering discussing maturity, the process of flowering and topdressing,
  • Section 4: Seed development - discussing the timing of grain-filling, assimilate supply and yield components.
Resources and method of delivery: Participants receive course notes as well as a copy of Procrop Canola and Development. Mix of presentation and practical session in the paddock.
