Name: Poultry care for the home flock
Description: A basic introduction to poultry and the management of the home flock.
Cost: After NSW Government subsidy, $205 GST-free.
Includes a copy of The Chook Book – An Introduction to Home Flock Management.
Course aim: To assist participants develop practical skills in caring for poultry on a small scale.
Learning outcomes:
  • Describe basic flock management including poultry lifecycle, flock replacement, brooding and purchasing
  • Identify feeding and watering requirements of your flock
  • Monitor and assess poultry health and welfare
  • Identify housing requirements of poultry
  • Develop a basic understanding of egg production and egg quality
  • Identify basic costs of production
  • Identify the regulations governing domestic poultry and selling eggs

  • Introduction
  • Getting started with a home flock
  • Flock husbandry (feeding, watering, health and disease management)
  • Poultry housing options (includes design features of The Poultry Penthouse)

  • Egg quality and food safety

Resources and method of delivery: Participants receive the publication The chook book, an introduction to home flock management.

This course is delivered using indoor and outdoor instruction.

Accreditation: This course is mapped to the national unit of competency AHCPLY202A - Maintain health and welfare of poultry.
