Name: Soil carbon mythbusters
Description: This one day workshop covers all facets of soil carbon and its relevance to agriculture. Major topics include global and small scale carbon cycling, forms and functions of the different components of soil carbon, soil tests and their differences, the influence of environmental and human factors to soil carbon, its importance and how to maintain or enhance this fundamental element of soil systems. The theory from the morning session will be translated to a practical session in the afternoon, and related to local agricultural systems utilising soil data and soil pits.
Cost: $380, includes GST
Course aims: To inform participants of the importance and complexity of soil carbon, and explore the possibilities and limitations that land managers may have of enhancing soil carbon in their own systems.

Course program/structure: Morning session (classroom/hall):
  • Carbon cycling
  • Different Forms and functions of soil carbon
  • Test methods and interpretation
  • Environmental influences on soil carbon – real data
  • Agriculture and soil carbon – different practices and their effects on carbon and the sustainability of different systems
Afternoon Session:
  • Paddock visit looking at soil profile using pit(s)
  • Utilising real data to relate theory to management practices of local systems
Resources and method of delivery: Participants receive a course manual.

This course is delivered using a mix of indoor and outdoor instruction.
