Smart Farms Projects grant program
NutrientSmart Farms
Approximately $15 million in grants was allocated through the two projects to assist landowners undertake on-ground works projects. A summary of the grant program is provided below.

NutrientSmart Farms
The NutrientSmart Farms project offered grants to landholders to undertake on-ground works that improved nutrient management on their property.
The types of works that were funded included:
- perimeter re-vegetation / buffer zones / filter strips
- erosion control / soil conservation
- mulching with / incorporation of compost
- stock exclusion fences / off-stream watering
- pasture re-establishment
- upgrades to systems that manage dairy effluent

WaterSmart Farms
The WaterSmart Farms project offered grants to irrigators to undertake on-ground works that improved water use efficiency on their property. Fully subsidised irrigation system assessments were also offered to determine the best options to improve water management on each property.
The types of works that were funded included:
- installing efficient sprinklers
- upgrading pumps
- upgrading irrigation systems
- water harvesting and reuse systems
- irrigation scheduling equipment
