Blue-green algal poisoning

The toxic blue-green algae, Microcystis cyanea and Anabaena circinalis are mainly a problem in late summer and autumn.

Diagnosis

Presence of algae as a green scum on the water. The clinical syndrome includes sudden death or jaundice and photosensitisation. Evidence of a hepatotoxin and gastrointestinal irritation.

Specimens required

  1. 500 ml of scum and water for examination for toxic algae.
  2. Serum from affected animals for serum chemistry/enzymology
  3. Sections of liver and kidney in buffered formalin.
