Brucellosis - Ovine
Diagnosis
Characterised by infertility in rams due to epididymitis. Abortion in ewes is not a common finding.
The diagnosis in rams must be based on the result of a clinical examination and serology, supported in some cases by bacteriological examination of semen.
See NSW Ovine Brucellosis Accredited Free Flock Scheme.
Specimens required
- Serum samples submitted chilled for serological testing. Samples can be submitted on the clot if they will be tested within 48 hours of collection.
- Semen samples collected aseptically and submitted chilled for culture or PCR.
- Testes, epididymes and accessory sex glands, including ampullae and seminal vesicles, submitted chilled for culture and PCR and histopathology
