Brucellosis - Porcine

Brucella suis infection was last diagnosed in N.S.W. in 1968.

Diagnosis

History and serology. The agglutination test is of use mainly as a herd test, as there is a tendency for infected pigs to cease to react although they still remain infected and false positives can also occur.

Specimens required

  1. Serum samples (not blood) submitted chilled for serology (SAT and RBT).
  2. Lesions, submitted chilled for bacteriology.
  3. Aborted foetuses submitted whole for bacteriology
