Contagious equine metritis (CEM)

Diagnosis

Recovery of Taylorella (formerly Haemophilus) equigenitalis from the genital tract.

Specimens required

Swabs should be taken from each of the following sites and submitted without refrigeration in Amies charcoal transport medium for bacteriology:

  1. Stallions - 3 swabs per animal, from the following:
    1. prepuce and base of penis (smegma)
    2. urethral fossa and urethral sinus
    3. terminal urethra
  2. Non-pregnant mares - 3 swabs per animal, from the following sites:
    1. cervix
    2. clitoral sinus
    3. clitoral fossa
  3. Pregnant mares - 2 swabs per animal from the following sites:
    1. clitoral sinus
    2. clitoral fossa
