Paramphistomiasis
See also Parasites - internal
Diagnosis
Grazing history and associated seasonal conditions. Clinical findings, demonstration of immature paramphistomes in the duodenum or adult flukes in the rumen and reticulum. Adult stomach flukes are not usually considered pathogenic.
Specimens required
From the dead animal:
- The abomasum and small intestine, unopened and tied off at each end, submitted chilled or frozen for parasitology.
NB. Faecal egg counts are of little value in diagnosing clinical paramphistomiasis. The presence of paramphistome eggs indicates non-pathogenic adult stomach flukes are present. Adult paramphistomes may confer some immunity.
