Protoporphyria

(Limousin and Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle)

An acute photosensitivity evident from birth and characterised by alopecia, ulceration and scarring of the pinnae, nares and possibly along the midline.

Diagnosis

History, clinical signs; confirmed by DNA analysis.

Specimens required

Diagnosis of the disease and heterozygote detection

  1. 20 to 25 hairs, with roots attached, from the distal end of the tail.
